Getting a Brazil Visa

So, I applied for Brazil visa at the Brazil Consulate in San Francisco.. The process is very straight forward. The consulate is very helpful, welcoming and timely. I would think using a visa agent won't provide any great advantage.

0) Get an appointment from the website (this gets you a appointment time for visiting the Consulate).
1) Needed: 1 passport size photo, pre filled form.
2) USPS Money order for required fees addressed to Consulate General of Brazil (fees for Indian citizen, 20$, for US 130 $).
2) Passport with 6 months validity
3) Return tickets/Itinerary (I just took them to be sure, the website doesn't mention this to be required).
4) For getting the Passport returned by mail, use Express mail from USPS. (costed 17$).

The application process took about 30 minutes in total.  The visa took about 10 business days, my passport was returned duly is about 12 business days including delivery time. I choose to get the passport delivered as I didn't want to travel to San Francisco again.

BTW, when the consulate mentions they will only process 42(or whatever) applications per day it doesn't mean that you may or may not be able to apply visa that they if you get the appointment if means that you are in those 42 applications.

  3. Vardhman,

What is the max length of stay allowed on your visa?

By the way, awesome to meet a fellow countryman who backpacks! I thought that tribe didn't exist!!

  4. Hey Arun,

MY visa has validity and duration of stay both 90 days and its Multiple entries.

Indeed, backpackers do exist in India and I keep finding them once in a while though not as often. Your reaction is similar to most ppl I meet(Indians and foreigners) :)

  5. Dear Vardhman

I am a fellow Indian (permanent resident of US) and I am planning to go backpacking in South America (Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Colombia) beginning in Jan 2011. I am wondering if I should get all these visa in advance from the respective consulates in LA (I live in San Diego) or should I get the visa in the penultimate country of travel. E.g. getting Brazil visa in Buenos Aires before going from BA to Rio. The latter would certainly give me a lot of flexibility, not to mention, it will also work better for the limited validity periods the visas have. Your comments would be much appreciated.

And it is nice to know a fellow India who backpacks.

    Best regards

    Pravin

  6. Hey Philosopher King:
Thanks for your comment. Your trip plans sounds great. In general getting Visa in the Penultimate country works pretty well and if it doesn't require you traveling to an extra city visiting the consulate to get it is the right way (as its safer to have your Passport with you as much as possible).

Its recommended to carry your passports colored copies of relevant visas whether you have the passport with you or not (specially in the night) and keeping the passport safe at hotel or somewhere.

You wouldn't need a visa to visit Equador and Bolivia IIRC so you must visit them :)

Sometimes having all the visas helps at the Border for e.g the Brazil/Paraguay/Argentina borders have Foz de Iguazu shared between them so visiting it from all the three countries might make sense so plan accordingly.

Let me know if you have more questions regarding Brazil, thats my favourite country in the world besides India :)
