The Edinburgh trip.

Once I figured out I was in UK for 11 days, I was sure to visit Edinburgh, for no reasons but the movie "Breavheart" and another documentary about Scotland's castles on Discovery channel. I did realize though that I have heard of this city for some big political/games event, but that was unimportant :)

People whom I have talked to about visiting Edinburgh suggested spending about 1 or 1.5 days as the "city doesn't have much to see". Based on my previous experience of visiting Italy's city without plan and spending all the time there, I decided to keep this one unplanned too. I was happy with the decision. Thought tickets cost may rise because of the last minute booking, you wouldn't want to rush your journey through such a city.

After spending the weekend in London and figuring out that most activities would be on weekend, I decided to head to Edinburgh sooner and return back to London before the next weekend. For the lack of planning/researching about how to travel my host Ankur's presence really helped. I was in the wrong impression that the trains are the cheapest way to travel but it soon turned out that the National Express buses (and others like MegaBus) have very competitive pricing compared to the train and the difference specially goes high for last minute/last day tickets.

My train ticket to Edinburgh would be costing be about 100-120 Pounds for same day/next day travel while the bus ticket for National Express came for 20-30 pounds for next day/same day travel.

So I took a bus for Scotland from Victoria Coach station. The coach worked out fine, it has WC and it doesn't keep running continuously for 8 hrs, it had stop overs may be 3-4 of them.
As experienced travelers suggest, you can use the lockers at the bus stations for day trips and avoid hotels cost if you don't realy need to stay overnight. The public toilets are the bus stations are pretty well maintained and could be used to freshen-up etc.

Since I had already booked the Caledonian hostel for the day I went ahead and checked in and made it to the free city tour in the morning. Like all of new Sandman's free tour this one was totally worth the time and very informative, I came to know abt things like: Church, hanging, Lake of poo, Edinburgh's castles, various nice stories about ppl including that about locksmith guy. The story about the quite a few murders for selling dead bodies for examination. (I am yet to read about these stories in details from somewhere). Then there were interesting stories about the Stone of Destiny as well as that about the spitting spot of Edinburgh and the statue of the King Henry 2.

In the evening I took the New Sandman's Ghost tour of Edinburgh (not free but worth it).
We visited cementaries and went up the carlton hill, heard stories about ferries, half man and red hat about suicides on the North Bridge and vampires, hannibals and witches.
Along the tour some of us traveling alone grouped together and then we had fun at the bar which the tour ends at with a complementary drink. The bar called the Bank Hotel had a lively scottish band playing some nice music. The pub was to be closed at 12 but the group was having so much fun that we decided to head to a club down the road. This place had awesome music and drinks they served vodka, whishkey, Rum for 1£ a peg. Now thats why hostelers(budget travelers) love Edinburgh more than London :)

The next day I went to Edinburgh castle. The castle is pretty big and its better to take their guided tours which are included in the entry ticket. The castle provides amazing views of the city and surrounding and the galleries are very interesting too. I specially like the one dedicated to the war heroes(National War Meuseum and Royal Scotts Regimental Meuseum). The Prisoners of War Exhibition is also a must see. On the other hand after hearing all the talk about the 3 symbols of Scottish Nationhood The sword, the crown and the Stone their gallery didn't really look that great.

It was already pretty late by the time I came out of the meuseum leaving little time to do anything else. I decided to take a walk on the Royal Mile and discovering whatever came on the way. At one of the food shops I tried the "deep friend Mars" which was yummy.
On the very end of the Royal Mile I reached the Scottish Parliament, which is open to public. The Parliaments intererior design looks like a complicated mess but that just me, somewhere I read "its a mix of modern and old architecture", what do I know about that ?

By this time I had decided to stay over for one more day. The next day I went to Leith which is an ancient port city next to Edinburgh (or part of it). I went all the way to Ocean terminal thinking it was a place with a beach or something, turned out it was a mall. Nevertheless the mall had amazing view of the sea. I enjoyed sipping tea and enjoying that scenic view from the Ocien View restaurant.

Later I walked around in Leith using the "Discover Leith Map" which pointed out points of interest. The Pilrig church is a very interesting one amongst others as in this Church you won't notice any statue of Jesus or Mary or angels, but just prayer seats much like Bahai temple in Delhi. The other points of interest include the Victoria bridge and Rennei's Isle. As the photos suggest this is one of most beautiful places I have been to.

With the remaining time I decided to visit the Cramond beach. (Yeah, I am obsessed with beaches). It was very cold and there fore almost no-one was on the beach. Also the beach isn't that famous and active. The tides are pretty low but interestingly there is an island connected to the beach by a walk through which I was not lucky enought to cross. The island path is open for few hours a day and you can walk to it rather than going though water. A strange thing I noticed was that the moon looked extra huge (only prettier) from here.

Just before leaving I decided to give my shot to meet the local CSers at their mid week meeting at Victoria's pub. I realized quickly that it was the first time I was talking to the locals in Scotland.

I have great memories of this place and still quite a bit left to discover in Edinburgh itself leave aside the whole of Scotland. It turns out that going further north in to the highlands gives you some of the most amazing views of nature. A definite must do next time.

Hyderabad Half Marathon: My first Half Marathon experience

Hyderabad Full and Half Marathon were organized on the last Sunday (30th August, 2009) by Hyderabad 10K foundation. It was the first time I tried running in a marathon and I felt great after finishing. Nitin also accompanied me for the same.

If you are looking for motivation note that, this is the first time I ever tried running more than 10 KM (that too was 2 years back) and usually I just run about 5-6 KM on treadmill in one session (30-40 minutes).

The half marathon started on time at 5:30 AM at KBR park and following a long route of 21.1 KM concluded at the Gachibowli stadium. The full one has extra forks from the same route.

Met quite a few IIITian including Balu, Sesh and Naman and a few Googlers.

Experiences :
It was quite easy to run the first 7 KMs with almost minimal breaks and continuous running/jogging. After this point I started talking water more regularly almost once every 1 or 2 KM and eating Glucose buscuits (Parle G), Banana peices or Sugar cubes.

The weather was pretty good for most times but started getting hotter towards the end. I noted that I was doing good in speed as per my targets, completed 10 KM in about an hour, then 18 in 2 hrs.

At about 17 KM I thought of taking some rest and walking instead of running but soon figured out it was getting to hard and decided to run slowly again instead of walking, basically the muscle around knee were hurting more on walking or may be I wanted to keep my target of finishing in 2:15.

Ultimately I completed in about 2:20. I figured that the professional's best timing was 1:03 and amateurs was 1:35.

Seeing many ppl around doing it and also been told so I did stretch quite a bit after finishing. It turns out that you should definitely stretch within 30 minutes after finishing. http://www.therunningbug.co.uk/ArticleDetails.aspx?Title=Post+Half+Marathon+Recovery

After effects of the Marathon/Recovery:
1) I didn't quite collapse as I did after sprinting 2.5 KM earlier during the year. May be the slow pace which is usual to treadmill practice helped.
2) After some time I observed quite severe headache. Turns out many ppl feel so. It got much better after taking good amount of rest read 6-7 hrs.
3) As suggested I did follow good Hyderation measures drinking lots of water. As it turns out you should eat well, drink(non-alcohol :)) and rest well.
4) It turns out that by the end of the day I was walking pretty comfortably and by day 2 end (today) I am pretty much normal barring the pain the calf musceles.

Here is Balu's post about the same:
http://thisissucksman.blogspot.com/2009/08/hyderabad-marathon-and-old-pals.html

I am pretty satisfied with my experience and performance in this half marathon. Today I came to know of Half Iron man competition. I am looking forward to training myself for the same and participating in it.

Malaysia Trip August 2009

We had a 4 day offsite, a trip to Malaysia sponsored by Google. The offsite started on Friday evening as some of us departed from Hyd to Chennai to KUL while others took HYD- KUL flight.

The Flights and arrival:
HYD-Chennai was Kingfisher red and Chennai - KUL was from Jet Airways. It turns out that the Jet Airways flight was the best among the flight including the return journey from KUL-HYD through Malaysian airlines. Malaysian airlines 4.5 hours flight didn't have on-demand video and it sucked bigtime, though the inflight service was not bad.

We arrive in KUL airport by around 7 AM and waited for the HYD flight to arrive. The immigration at the KUL airport was swift. On the airport we were able to buy cellone prepaid cards for (3.5 RM + min 5 RM talktime, withtalk time to india being .52 RM per miinute).

From Malaysia Trip Aug 2009

We then set off for the hotel in the volvo like AC bus which was the standard bus all over Kualalumpur. Its about a 1.5 hrs drive from the Airport to the city center, where we stayed at Imperial Sheraton hotel. Pretty tired we all decided to take rest after the breakfast and meet for lunch.

From Malaysia Trip Aug 2009

The lunch and dinner over the next three days turned out to be pretty much Indian food, something many of us disliked, I for one being a vegetarian couldn't complain much but thought we could have tried veg asian cuisines. It looked to me that food lovers can find any kind of food they wanted in the city with lots of cuisine specific restaurants around.

The First Day: Batu Caves and Fireflies tour

After lunch we proceeded to Batu caves which hosts a famous Hindu temple along with a very tall gold plated idol of a hindu God. The caves were magnificent in size and beauty. They must have been like 100 ft high caves with quite a few stalactites and stalagmites formations around the corners. The actual temples aren't that big and you might forget to notice them as they occupy just small corners of the very big caves. Some ppl decided to take the tour of the smaller dark(er) caves nearby, I choose not to. People were mostly disappointed by the same.

Post Batu caves we went to see the Firefly show at ........ this place was another long ride out of the city. The place didn't look anything special until it got dark and when we sat on boats to take the tour. Then it was plain beautiful, on both sides of the water body there were tons of fireflies blinking giving a twinkling yellow light formation as if like a christmas tree. I have seen these creatures earlier when I stayed in Sarni but their numbers here were just unimaginable. A trivia about Firefly is that the female firefly eats away the male after mating.

In the evening a few of us went to the Hard Rock cafe and enjoyed the place quite a lot. There was live music for most of the time and they did play pretty popular pop songs instead of just Rock music all the time. The interesting thing I noticed was that the price of drinks was getting cheaper as time passed. At the end they had a offer of 10 RM for a tequila. Later our guide told us more details about the liquors in Malaysia. Seemingly they make quite a bit of drinks inhouse specially the Tequilas there by keeping the cost less. Wines and Whiskies are usually imported and therefore costly. Seemingly a 750 ml of Tequila could start from 30 RM while that of whisky and wine may start from 80 RMs. More interesting the liquors sell stops after 7 PM and is only available from selected store with licenses there is no concept of wine shops here in Malaysia.

The Second Day: Genting Highlands
The next day we headed to Genting Higlands. This place was about 2 hrs away from our hotel. I didn't know much about the place, turned out it was a theme park with rides. Pretty disappointing for those who have been to Six Flags, Universal Studio or Disneyland in Los Angeles. The rides weren't great to say the least. The most interesting according to me was the Swinger ride which was the first ride we all took, the flying coaster looked promising but ended too quickly. Quite a few rides have weight limits like the bumpy boats( a variation of bumpy cars). There is a also a casino, which is a decent sized one. The tables started from 25 RM for blackjack and 10 RM for Roulette.

Some of us decided to use the time after lunch to visit a nearby resort which offered Trekking in the forest. The trek was a pretty simple one but pretty scenic. We didn't see a lot of animals or plans besides the bamboo plants and normal shrubs and few leeches but could hear sounds of a few birds/animals from nearby.

The Third Day: Port Dickson Beach
The Third day was planed to be at Sunway Lagoon but we decided on second days' evening that may be we should try the beach instead (I guess AH1N1 played some role). We therefore went to Port Dickson beach which was the closest (120KM) from KUL. It tooks us about 90 minutes to reach. Choosing the beach turned out to be a great idea. We enjoyed playing Football first, then Praveen and I went for Water Scootering which many decided to do afterwards, we also choose to do the bumpy boat ride on a 3 person bumpy boat which turned out to be the most thrilling ride I ever took. It was definitely more thrilling than water scootering even though I got off the scooter once and got by on myself. Everyone who took the ride enjoyed it thoroughly but no one would agree to do it again :) I would say, that was too much of adventure for a single day :D

This day we had lunch at Pizza hut which thankfully gave us one veggie pizza option. I loved it after all I have survived on Margarita pizza for couple of days in Europe this was better topped and was just one time affair :) After the meal we headed back we tried visiting KL tower that day but got delayed in traffic and decided to push it for next day. Though Sunset is supposedly the best time to be there on the tower (and with you loved one, or someone u want to be become your loved one as the Tower's audio guide suggested :)) Some ppl got down at the Central market. We realized next day that thats the place you should go for shopping instead of the Mid valley mall. The dinner was a Aryan hotel in downtown, pretty good.

From Malaysia Trip Aug 2009

The Forth Day: City Tour of Kuala-lumpur
Next day was the City tour. We went to Patronas tower which we have already been visiting for past 2-3 days/nights for photos. You can't visit much of the tower other than the entrance in the Surya KLCC building which is at the bottom of the towers. The skybridge is actually open for tours but we couldn't get a tour as it was all full. Supposedly you should get the ticket at 8:30 AM if u want to be sure.

Next we visiting the KL tower, we spent about 1/2 hr listening to audio tapes and gazing the city from this tower, they view is superb. The tower is about 1052 feet and the elevator takes about 50 seconds pretty good isn't it ? We also went to Kings Palace which we only watched from Outside the gate and couldn't really get a good view nor photos. At this point we were already lagging behind schedule to go to shopping. The guide dropped us the Mid Valley mall. As I mentioned earlier that isn't really a place to go for shopping as a tourist specially if you are looking for soveiniers/T-shirt. Luckily after asking a lot of ppl we found our "I <3 Malaysia" t-shirt on First floor at central court at Giordano shop.

That was about it. We left for the airport from the Mall.

Interesting facts:
1) South East Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia are famous for Water sports and beaches don't miss them.
2) Malaysia has a literacy rate of about 98.5% (up from about 40% at independence) and a democratic government which has been ruling continuously for 52 years since independence. The government is popular because of its policies in terms of education and medical facilities (almost everything is paid by the state when it comes to medical treatment).
3) Malaysia is quite a modern country but is conservative in some regards, please inquire local customs to avoid getting in trouble, PDA could get you in trouble for sure :)

Lonar Trip

After a lot of thoughts about going somewhere we finally decided to visit Lonar, Maharastra on the weekend of 10-12 July. Two of my friends who have been there told me great things about the place and a quick wikipedia/wikitravel look confirmed that the place is infact a good one for a weekend trip.
From Lonar, Maharastra

What's Special about Lonar: Well lonar is famous for its crator lake which is about a 1.2 KM in diameter and said to be formed due to a meteorite strike about 50,000 years back. What's more special is that its the third largest crator lake in the world. Another speciality which may not sound very interesting is that its water is Alkaline and therefore its devoid of any plants or fishes.

We started the trip on early Saturday morning (around 1 AM) on a rented Innova from 4 wheels. The night journey was expectedly not very exciting or beautiful so most of us dozed off very soon, but as soon as it was dawn ppl started getting up one by one. When I woke up we were at "Bodhan" and our driver decided to stop and take nap, it was around 7 AM. Rohit figured out that we could get nice fresh Idlies as breakfast and so some of us did. We left that place by around 8 AM heading towards the destination. Which was approx 250 KM from there, our driver had taken a wrong route as we realized soon, but it wasn't that bad, probably a 100 KMs extra.

The officer at the RTO checkpost in AP was a honest man and demanded 200 bucks for the 7 days permit and made a receipt for the same, I felt good because of a strikingly different experience when we going to Wayanad from Bangalore. I felt nice that the taxes were so less but soon we realized that we had to pay a separate "fees" at the Maharastra RTO checkpost. This guy demanded 700 bucks for a 7 days permit which is as you can guess excess. Unlike Kerala the booth didn't have any mention of prices anywhere so there was little to expect. Now this gentleman gave us too reciepts one for 400 and another for 300. As we noticed the 300 Rs receipt was merely a piece of printed paper with no proper stamps but "RTO Bhainsa, Dist Nanded", the other one actually carried a Govt of India or Maharastra stamp. So do expect to give some bribe to the RTOs at the border, yeah we cud have argued etc. but from previous experience it felt like wasting of time.

After another 4-5 hours of driving we finally reach Lonar by 12:30 or so. The famous MTDC (Maharastra Tourism's) Resort is actually right next to the Lake. How close ? Well 2 minutes by walking out of the Resort and across the Highway. The Resort is pretty nice, with big well maintained rooms. We stayed in 2 bed, AC deluxe room and the cost was 800 bucks per room. The resort also provided pretty decent food, specially the Poha/Pohe, Parantha, Tea which were yummy as well the Dal tadka which I liked. We ended up eating all 3 meals at the same place. The actually village and shops are at about 1 KM distance from the lake and resort and don't seem to offer much in food. We cudn't find PuranPuri which Abhishek wanted to eat anywhere.

On the contrary we found quite nice Jalebi which being prepared as we reached the shop at around 6:30-7 PM. These "Harayana special" jalebis were super awesome, as we were enjoying them we saw the Movie "Taraju's" poster in the background, and it was decided among the 4 of us instantaneously to watch the movie. While heading to the these shops we also had a chance to see how the multi-cultural celebrations were arranged for a visiting MLA. In about 10 minutes that we were following the procession we heard these songs in different languages: Appadi Podu (Tamil), Ringa Ringa from Slumdog Millionaire(Hindi) and funny Crazy Chicken (Instrumental but probably of Foriegn origin). [Let me know if there any copyright violation by posting the link to the song, I will remove it].

We had to return to the resort for the Bhajiyas which we planned to eat there and also for the dinner and then we would come back for the 9:30 PM show. After a pretty heavy dinner we did go for the movie. It was a different experience to watch the movie on the non-digital print after a long time. After the movie we tried our luck in asking entry in to the projector room and we got it. The guys nicely explained and demonstrated us how the whole thing worked, how nice of them.

The next morning I did wake up early to see special sunrise effects but there weren't any because of cloudy weather. As decided earlier we trekked down to the lake and on our way down decided to take a guides help, which proved helpful later as he took us through easier/faster treks and helped us see at least a couple extra temples, buildings on the way. Of special interest is the Gomukh one which has a very clean water stream under which ppl can take bath. The water felt pretty refreshing after the trek in the moderately sunny conditions.

At this point some of us decided to head back to the resort while Rohit and I decided to see the other special temples. The famous ones we went to are called the Datya Sudhan temple, which has a carvings similar to that of Khujraho (as seen on TV :D) and the Hanuman mandir, which has a single rock carving idol of hanuman in resting position. The guide told that its actually made our of the meteorite's material, no idea how much to believe that. Besides these two there were couple of temples which we could have visited included a pretty big Jain temple which were closed at it was around afternoon. So we headed back to resort.

After another heavy lunch at the resort, we started back towards Hyderabad. The highlight of the return journey was once again the "Jalebi" at Nanded bus stop, accompanied by some dry "pani-puris". The return journey took about 11 hours including abt 2 hrs of breaks, including Dinner at the Natraj Dhaba near Nizamabad.

Info:

2) MTDC resorts booking website http://www.maharashtratourism.gov.in, they have online booking and payment via credit card. Pretty cool stuff. Make sure to select the location as Lonar.
Note that checkout time is 9 AM, but the staff is friendly and accommodating.
3) Aurangabad the nearby city has the famous Ajanta Alora caves you can try visiting them. Its about 160 KM oneway.

Bike trip to SuryaLanka and Voderevu Beach

The weekend of June 13-14 the Google Hyderabad bikers club had a bike trip to SuryaLanka and Voderevu beach.

Numbers: 10 bikes, 1 car. 16 ppl, ~350 KM oneway. Cost: Fuel, about 20 Ltrs for round trip in most bikes. Food (about 100 Rs per meal). Accomodation (350 per head 2 days, AC :))

From SuryaLanka Bike trip

Now the details: We left at around 6:15 PM from Google office at Kondapur, Hyderabad (yeah bad timings, but we signed up for it :)). Soon as we reached Madhapur it started raining and got worse over next few minutes. There was some chaos because of the rains and before we could get to the petrol pump at road number 12 at least some of us weren't in the group anymore. After some confusion and stuff we finally got together at MPM mall at abids and started the ride again this time getting out of the city. It turned out the rains have slowed the traffic much further causing lots of roads being jammed, fortunately bikes could take the alternate muddy lanes and continue. Ultimately when we stopped just outside the city we had spent about 2.5 hrs and gone about 49 KM and most were pretty badly soaked.

From SuryaLanka Bike trip

The ride went quite fine after that, we stopped over at two three places in search of dinner finally managed to get food at the "Pal Punjabi Dhaba", which was pretty good. The rain had mostly stopped and riding speeds improved, though very soon we came to a single lane highway.

From SuryaLanka Bike trip

At around 2:00 AM or so came the first surprise of the trip, my bike's front tire got punchured. I was definitely among the less prepared ones as far as these surprises were concerned. Finally Ram and others managed to find a mechanic guy to come to the place where we halted and then the whole wheel was taken out and taken to a nearby shop for fixing the punchure. It took about 1 hr and 15 minutes before we could get back to start, just to realize that the car's battery has drained as they kept the indicator on all the while :D. Some pushing the car and we were back on the roads.

Besides this the onward journey didn't have any more unexpected stops and we reached our destination by about 9:15 in the morning taking enough breakes during the night and speeding quite a bit as the dawn came.

We had already decided to stay at Vodarevu because the only accomodation at Suryalanka, the Suryalanka beach resort by APTDC didn't have any vacancy so we went to Vodarevu and stayed at Vamsi Krishna Guess House the same place where we stayed in our last trip to Voderevu.
After resting for some time we decided to go for lunch to Bapatla which is about 12 Kms from Voderevu. Lunch was at ShreeGodavari restuarant, the non-veggie loved the prawns but the veggies like me didn't have a great experience with the meals.

Post lunch we went to SuryaLanka beach which is just 5 Kms from Bapatla, it was a nice ride and the beach was great too. Suryalanka is considered much better destination then Voderevu as the beach is cleaner and more targetted towards tourist compared to later being more of a fishing beach. I didn't wanted to lose the chance of getting in to the beach and went ahead alone spending some 10-15 minutes having fun with the waves before we decided to head back to Voderevu.

After we returned Ram figured out that we could take our bikes to the beach and ride them there. What a nice surprise! Most of us were super excited and went ahead and spent the next 1 or 2 hrs biking on the beach. Two of the bullets didn't like the salt water much and gave quite a bit of troubles to the riders, ultimately as it got dark we took back our bikes to the lodge and later came back to the beach for Bonfire.

From SuryaLanka Bike trip

From SuryaLanka Bike trip

The bonfire was another experience of its own, with the very breezy winds it took about an hour of consistent effort and abour 3 Litres of fuel(petrol ?) to get the woods catch the fire, as quite a few of us enjoyed the drinks and scenic view and some nice chitchat.

The next morning some of us had the lovely breakfast of idly/dosa which I am super fond of, the prices were unbelievable each idly 1 Rs and dosa 3 bucks :) We went back to the beach on bikes though we were too late for the earlier plan of watching the sun-rise from the sea reaching at about 8 AM instead of 5:30 or so. I got a perfect reflection photo of my bike with great struggle but unfortunately my friend deleted all photos by mistake, damn you.

We left at about 9 AM or so back towards Hyderabad. The return journey was fun and exciting too as we had good rest in the night. There weren't too many surprises, Santosh's bullet had some trouble (which he got get fixed himself but we spent about 1 hr) and then Vivek's bike had a tire punchure. After taking our lunch quite late we started back for Hyderabad, we reached Narkatpally at about 7:30 PM. After which I would say we had about the toughest riding of the trip with just 1 lane road and too many trucks all the time. Our earlier target of cover the remaining 50 KM by 9:00 PM was soon to revised. Ultimately we reached outskirts of Hyderabad by about 10:30 PM.

This was my best bike ride till date and despite my earlier apprehension about driving in the night and all the risks involved it turned out to be wonderful. I am now looking forward to longer rides and seeing our photos many of my friends who missed it are now determined to come for the next one.
